The Residency

Social Studies Art Residency is an artist-in-residence program that encourages guests to investigate their art practice within the environment of a rural small-town in Arbuckle, CA. Those interested in contemplating personal growth, exploration and experimentation are encouraged to apply.
The residency is best suited for individuals, close-partners/collaborators, and families.

Here is some specific information about the space.

Social Studies Residency is located in Arbuckle, CA, roughly 45 minutes North of Sacramento.

We supply:
- 2 bedroom apartment with full kitchen and bathroom
- 20 x 40 ft barn/studio space
- wood working tools
- covered outdoor studio
- seasonal vegetable garden

All aspects of the residency are located on Sierra and Ross’s 1/3 acre property in the center of town.
The apartment and studio space are located behind their home.

Accessibility: There is uneven terrain throughout the exterior of the property and stairs inside the apartment. We are prepared to produce or facilitate accommodations such as wheelchair ramps or other mobility aides as we are reasonably able to fulfill.

Social Studies - Spring/Summer 2025 Application

All applications are due Sunday, January 26th, 2025 by midnight.
You will receive a response of your status during the week of February 3rd.

The application is free and selected residents pay a $50 per night fee during their stay.
Half of the total residency fee must be paid prior to arrival, the other half paid before you leave.

Please complete and include the following in your application. 

  • Completed Google Form with basic info and date selection

  • Statement of Intent

    • Please address your current practice and your goals and intentions while attending Social Studies. How might the time and space provided by Social Studies benefit your practice and/or growth? What drew you to apply to Social Studies? (Approximately 500 words.)

  • Images and Image List

    • Please include 5-8 images of your current work in a PDF/Doc

    • If work is video/sound based, please include linked videos and/or still images.

    • Include an image list or description for each image that includes:
